Spring Cleaning

Ready to freshen up your rooms in 2010? Spring is a great time not just for cleaning, but for freshening your decor. Put that garage sale money to work and keep your home up to date.

March 20th is the first day of spring this year, less than a week away.  Plants will start to sprout, the weather will (finally) get warmer and you will see your neighbors who disappeared into their home last fall.  Most people will get the itch to clean up the yard, their home and just freshen up their life in general. I would suggest taking spring cleaning to a new level this year.  This doesn’t mean you have to get a big stack of cash out.  Just try to take a new look at your rooms.  Start at the first room you see when you enter your home and work your way back.  Ask a close friend, child or sibling (someone who will give you an honest answer) what looks stale or in need of some “refreshing” this year.
Start with simple items that are easy (and affordable) to replace, and consider the following:

• Pillows: Is the pattern current? Does it look over used? Are the colors faded?
• Drapes: Are they too heavy for the window? Are they blocking too much light? Is the color or pattern outdated?
• Rugs: Does it show traffic patterns or have staining? Is the pattern current?
• Wall Decor: is the size appropriate? Is the subject matter appropriate for the room?
             Example: You wouldn't hang a picture of fruit in an office.
• Knick-Knacks: Do you have too many "treasures" hanging around? Minimize!

If you really want to freshen up it is critical not to make decisions based on the price or time you spent on your décor. Think about what would look great. If you’re feeling ambitious, consider changing paint colors or adding an accent wall. Taking a few simple steps to freshen your surroundings will give you that great feeling you get from living in a clean spring home.
